Reports are circulating on social media that some Thai embassies are no longer insisting on proof of funds of 500,000 baht for a 60 day tourist visa (not to be confused with the Special Tourist Visa).
According to a report in the Pattaya News, posts in various social media groups dedicated to the 60 day tourist visa, would indicate that some embassies and consulates are no longer listing the requirement.
The insistence on visa applicants being able to prove they’ve had 500,000 baht sitting in their bank account for at least 6 months has proved a significant impediment for many.
And, while the government and tourism officials remain focused on discussing the Special Tourist Visa, phone calls to Thai embassies in both the UK and the US indicate that the 60 day tourist visa is still an option.
In normal circumstances, this visa permits foreigners to enter the Kingdom for visits of up to 60 days and can also be extended in-country.
Reports are mixed as to whether it can be changed to a visa that would permit a longer stay, such as a retirement or business visa.
However, visa applicants should bear in mind that the strict conditions attached to the Special Tourist Visa will also apply in the case of a 60 day visa.
These include mandatory quarantine at your own expense, multiple Covid tests, a fit-to-fly certificate, a certificate of entry from your local embassy, and insurance cover of at least US$100,000.
Notwithstanding all of the above, the 60 day visa is being seen by some as a possible means for visitors from “high-risk” countries to enter Thailand. Currently, they are excluded from applying from the Special Tourist Visa.
