Thailand’s new tourist visa requires proof of Bt500,000

It's all about the money, honey

Tourists applying for a Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) to Thailand are now expected to show six-months bank statements holding a balance of at least 500,000 THB.

This cynical new financial requirement has been confirmed on the websites of several Thai embassies around the world. (see below)

The SETV allows foreigners to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days from the date of arrival and is valid for 90 days from date of issue.

But, they are not permit to leave and visit other countries during their stay in the Kingdom.

Oh, no – that money is to be spent in Thailand only.

Previously, applicants for the SETV had to provide proof of at least 20,000 THB or 40,000 THB per family and often, depending on the Thai Embassy or Consulate, this was never actually asked for.

But now applicants need to prove a bank balance of half a million baht or their currency equivalent.

Which is USD$16,400, GB£12,500 Euro 14,000 or AUS 22,700

PLUS, you will have to held that balance for a period of six-months prior to visa application.

This news, on top of current requirements of quarantine booking, fit-to-fly certificate and $100,000 health insurance cover looks set to kill off the Thai tourism industry once and for all.

Not to mention related hospitality sectors.

Well, good luck to the Thai people and we hope you get well soon.
