The Thai cop caught extorting cash from a tourist in Chiang Mai is to be made an ‘example of’ whatever that means.
And a top cop has promised no more bribes after the case embarrassed the Royal Thai Police.
The RTP are saying that Cherngchai Wongburinphan could face expulsion from the force if found guilty.
With top brass stating yesterday that the officer was clearly seen taking a bribe, guilt seems a foregone conclusion.
Daily News reported that Chiang Mai police chief Maj-Gen Phichet Jiranantasin had ordered Cherngchai’s immediate transfer to clerical duties while an investigative committee looks into the case.
The cop – caught pocketing 200 baht for un-clamping a rented motorbike rather than processing a ticket – will face both internal disciplinary procedures and criminal prosecution if there is found to be a case to answer.
Phichet put Pol Col Phaisan Nanta in charge of the matter while a speedy – that’s 30 days – open, fair and just investigation with justice to all parties was proposed.
Phaisan called a meeting of traffic cops in the northern city to tell them in no uncertain
terms that no bribes were to be taken.
All fines were to be done by tickets paid for at the station according to regulations.
He spoke of the loss of face for the force in this damaging matter saying that the officer concerned could face the maximum penalty of expulsion from the force. – Daily News
