British postman caged in Thai jail for dealing crystal meth after ditching ‘boring old England’

A BRIT postman ditched delivering mail for a glamorous life running a bar in Thailand – only to end up caged in a hellhole jail.

Jimmy Kelly’s shocking downfall is told in the new episode of hit TV series Banged Up Abroad.

The Brit left his “normal mundane life” in Watford, Herts, and the job he “absolutely loathed” after being offered redundancy.

Flush with the £33,000 pay-out, he decided to open a bar in Thailand — his lifelong dream.

But then things “spiralled out of control” and the ex-postie turned into a pimp and crystal meth dealer.

“When I arrived in Thailand, I went into party mode,” he said.

“It was the first time I’d felt happy for a long, long time.”

One of Jimmy’s mates owned a “very popular” bar so he got advice from him.

He explained that he would have to let prostitutes work there and pay the police.

Despite not knowing he was the right guy for the job, Jimmy decided it was “worth the risk” and rented-out a bar and followed his mate’s advice to hire some women.

Jimmy said: “If you’ve got a bar and no girls, you’ve got no chance.

“Selling drinks, hiring-out girls: you’ll make money that way.”

Jimmy claimed he initially paid Thai cops protection money and was wary of drug-dealers hustling in his bar.

He once spotted a guy “blatantly selling drugs” to his prostitutes and told him to leave.

Shockingly, Jimmy said the the drug-dealer immediately aimed a pistol at his head.

“He smiled back at me. It was the worst thing I could have wished for,” Jimmy said.

“Of course it was a death threat.”

Things went from bad to worse when Jimmy’s older brother and “best mate” Gary visited him in 2009.

His sibling was outright disgusted at his seedy bar and lifestyle and told him to return to England.

“Next day, my brother returned home,” Jimmy said.

Instead of heeding his warning, Jimmy tried crystal meth — known in Thailand as “ice” — for the first time.

“All of a sudden, it just grabs of you,” he said.

A couple of months later, he was not just smoking it but selling huge amounts.

“In hindsight, that was a terrible idea,” he reflected.

Jimmy bought a shocking £13,000 in crystal meth as his business as a drug dealer boomed.

Paranoia sank in and he realised the danger of undercutting the local drug dealers.

His fear was well-deserved: his drugs game was busted when cops got the help of a gorgeous honeytrap who had sex with Jimmy then persuaded him to giver her some ice.

Caged in Samui District Prison for as long as 25 years, Jimmy was left longing for “boring old England”.

Left in a sweltering hot cell he shared with 30 inmates, he found himself contemplating suicide.

“Things go so slow here. The days turn into weeks, you start losing track of what you’re doing. It just wears you down.”

Amazingly, his estranged brother Gary managed to rescue him by spending his own life savings on hiring a £90,000 lawyer to get him a four-year sentence.

The reduced time still felt excruciating to Jimmy, whose only friend in prison hanged himself in his cell.

“It was torture, but I’m guilty,” Jimmy admitted.

The Home Office brought Jimmy back to England after he served three years in the Thai jail.

He spent the rest of his sentence in HMS Wandsworth, before being released in 2014.

He has returned to Watford and is now a pub darts champion living near his brother Gary.

Jimmy said: “People have said to me, ‘would you do it again?’

“Not a hope.”

Banged Up Abroad airs on Thursday January 24 at 9pm on National Geographic.
