Mekong River BURSTS banks, flooding in NINE Thai provinces

Nine provinces in the northeastern region are affected by flooding as a result of heavy rain and overflow from the Mekong River, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department chief Chayapol Thitisak said on Sunday.

The nine provinces are Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, Ubon Ratchathani, Bung Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Roi-et, Kalasin and Yasothon.

Hardest hit is Nakhon Phanom,where water from the Mekong River has inundated parts of 12 districts — Muang, Renu Nakhon, Pla Pak, Tha Uthen, Phon Sawan, That Phanom, Ban Phaeng, Na Kae, Wang Yang, Si Songkhram, Na Wa and Nathom — affecting 12,256 households with 26,898 people, along with 179,704 rai of farmland.

In nearby Mukdahan, parts of Dong Luang, Muang, Nikhom Kham Soi, Don Tan, Wan Yai, Nong Sung and Kham Cha-i districts have been flooded, affecting 11,443 householdswith 38,355 people and 28,582 rai of farmland.

In Ubon Ratchathani, Khemmarat, Pho Sai, Khong Chiam, Na Tan, Si Muang Mai and Khuang Nai,  districts adjacent to the Mekong river have been flooded, affecting 4,163 people and 4,835 rai of farmland.

In Amnat Charoen, overflow from the Mekong River has swamped portions of Muang, Senangkha Nikhom, Hua Taphan, Lue Amnat and Chanuman districts, affecting 1,922 people and 5,548 rai of agricultural land.

In Bung Kan, five districts by the Mekong River in Bung Kan province — Muang, Bung Khla, Si Wilai, So Phisai and Pak Khat — are partially underwater.

Also hit by flooding are six districts in Sakon Nakhon province, two in Roi-et, three in Kalasin and five in Yasothon. The floodwaters in these provinces are receding. – Bangkok Post
