A KNIFEMAN carrying a smoking backpack stabbed 14 defenceless passengers on a bus in Germany yesterday afternoon.
Horrified witnesses told how the attacker boarded the packed bus and randomly attacked passengers with a kitchen knife, seriously wounding two people.
Authorities said of the perpetrator, a German citizen originally from Iran: “Nothing can be ruled out, including a terrorist background.”
The first victim, who had just stood to offer his seat to an elderly woman, was stabbed in the chest.
As victims screamed, the bus driver braked and opened the doors so terrified passengers could flee – before being attacked himself.
A police patrol car close to the horror in the Kucknitz district of Lubeck in northern Germany, was quick to the scene and the 34-year-old suspect was overpowered.
An eyewitness described the grim scenes on the vehicle, which was heading to the popular Travemunde beach.
She said: “One of the victims had just given up his place to an elderly woman, when the attacker stabbed him in the chest. It was carnage.”
Another witness, who saw the aftermath, said: “The passengers jumped out of the bus and screamed, it was terrible, and then the injured were taken away.”
While neither the motive nor full identity of the perpetrator had last night been established, attorney general Ulla Hingst said: “Nothing can be ruled out, including a terrorist background.”
German police said there was no indication that the attacker was politically radicalised.
Hingst also said police are investigating a suspicious rucksack after witnesses reported that the man had been carrying a “smouldering” bag on the bus headed for the Baltic coast.
The backpack, which reportedly contained a flammable, alcoholic liquid, was left on the bus and firefighters were called to the scene.
Germany has been on high security alert after a number of deadly attacks by Islamist extremist in recent years..
