An American tourist was found hanged in a room at a Chiang Mai hostel on Thursday night in what police believe to be a suicide.
The tourist was identified as Samuel Frederic, 38, from Oklahoma. Pol Lt Col Anek Chaiwong, deputy commander of the Phuping police station, said the tourist was found hanging from a strip torn from his travelling bag and tied to a bar of the bedstead.
A doctor’s preliminary inspection turned up no sign of foul play.
Anek said there were five bottles of foreign whisky in the man’s bag, each partially consumed.
An employee of the hostel on Nimmanhemin Road said Frederic checked in alone on Thursday afternoon and was staying in a dormitory room on his own because there were no other guests at the time.
A maid seeking to clean the room in the evening found the body.
An autopsy will be performed at Maharaj Nakhon Chiang Mai Hospital. – The Nation/Asia News Network
