Internet users have been warned to be careful when they seek dates online after a teenage schoolgirl was indecently assaulted and injured in a meeting with a 24-year-old man she met online.
Initial information showed the 16-year-old girl was threatened with a knife when she fought off the man in his flat at Tai Wo House in Wo Che Estate in Sha Tin, a police source said.
“The girl suffered minor injuries in a struggle and managed to run out of the flat to seek help,” the source said.
Passers-by found the injured girl outside Tai Wo House and called officers.
A police spokeswoman said the girl suffered minor cut wounds to her neck and right hand. She was treated at Prince of Wales Hospital.
When police arrived, the man had left his flat. Officers then searched the area. At about 1pm Thursday, they arrested the 24-year-old man in the estate.
Police are treating the case as indecent assault and criminal intimidation.
The suspect, a delivery worker, was held for questioning on Thursday night and had not been charged.
Be vigilant when meeting people online, police advised. “You should ask your friends to accompany you when you meet net friends and the meeting should be in a public place,” a spokesman said.
Police figures show there were 1,019 reports of indecent assault across the city last year, a 4.6 per cent drop compared with 1,068 in 2015. – SCMP
