Video – Hanoi car chase leads to heroin haul

Twenty-nine bricks of heroin are found inside the get-away vehicle.

Hanoi police have successfully apprehended a drug trafficker with 29 bricks of heroin in his car after chasing him for more than 30km through various districts in the capital, officers said on Friday.

The suspect was Trinh Van Tu, 27, a resident in Thuy Nguyen District in the northern city of Hai Phong.

Police had followed Tu closely after being tipped off that he would pick up the drugs from another dealer on a location in the Ho Chi Minh Trail, which passes through Hieu Mon Town in Hanoi’s Chuong My District, on June 2.

At around 6:00 am that day, Tu arrived at the location and exchanged his car with the dealer’s vehicle, where the drugs were hidden.

Tu then drove the drug-contained vehicle on National Highway No.6 towards Hanoi’s Ha Dong District.

Apparently knowing that he was being followed, the drug trafficker made multiple attempts to cut off the police, but all efforts were failed.

When Tu stopped at traffic lights at Ba La Intersection in Ha Dong, the officers decided to storm out to catch him.

The suspect, however, did not give up easily; instead, he crashed his vehicle straight into the police cars and other surrounding vehicles in order to get out of the heavy traffic at the intersection.

Even when police opened fire and broke one of the windows on his car, the suspect still managed to continue running away.

After a 30-km ride, Tu stopped at Van Binh Commune in Hanoi’s Thuong Tin District and got rid of his car, only after discarding one of its wheels, which he believed was where the drugs were hidden.

After throwing the wheel some 500m away from his abandoned vehicle with the hope of getting rid of the evidence, Tu continued fleeing on foot for another 2km before being apprehended by law enforcement officers.

Police have found 29 bricks of heroin inside the suspect’s vehicle and are further investigating the case.
