Student beaten over guitar dies after 16 days in coma

A 16-year-old boy who was severely beaten after refusing to lend his guitar to a classmate died on Friday after more than two weeks in a coma.

Sitthichai “Nong Job’’ Pengnan, a Mathayom Suksa 4 student at a school in Na Noi district of this northern province, was pronounced dead at 12.48pm on Friday at Nan Hospital.

The 16-year-old was admitted to hospital on May 4 with severe head injuries after an assault by an 18-year-old classmate. Angered that Sitthichai would not lend his guitar, the youth used a wooden baton to strike him on the head three times. The victim collapsed and was taken to the hospital.

Sitthichai sustained brain injuries and was placed on life support in critical condition. After 16 days in a coma, he stopped breathing on Friday.

The family of the student took his body from the hospital on Friday afternoon for a funeral at Ban Na Daeng village in Na Noi district.

Thian Pengnan, his father, said tearfully that he wanted his son to be the last victim of student violence.

Pol Col Somchai Paopanit, the deputy police chief of Nan, said the 18-year-old attacker was arrested earlier and had confessed to having beaten his classmate in a fit of anger. The student is in police custody pensing further legal action.
