A man sneaked into a parked Ranger Rover with the engine still running and ran away, causing traffic chaos in Hanoi before being held by police near midnight on Friday.
Police said they are investigating the case but did not confirm whether the incident was a car theft or not.
According to a video posted on YouTube, a Ranger Rover was seen rushing toward the Kim Lien intersection on Tay Son Street in Dong Da District at high speed, with several motorbikes chasing behind.
The incident took place at around 11:00 pm, with the allegedly stolen car crashing into a motorbike, injuring two people, when reaching Nguyen Chi Thanh Street before continuing its escape.
The Ranger Rover only stopped after hitting a series of motorbikes and an electric bicycle parked on the sidewalk on Hoang Quoc Viet Street.
The driver immediately got off the car and attempted to abscond on foot before being captured by police.
Four severely damaged motorbikes and one electric bicycle were found beneath the Ranger Rover following the incident, a Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper correspondent reported from the scene.
Eyewitnesses said a man had got into a parked Ranger Rover, when the car’s real owner stopped by a pharmacy with the engine still running, and ran away at high speed.
The car’s owner immediately shouted for help and police quickly entered a chase to catch the alleged car thief.
