PHICHIT: Police are seeking at least seven local football players for allegedly raping an 18-year-old woman in their pickup truck after abducting her from a Songkran party last week.

Pol Maj Gen Jaruay Pholprasert, the Phichit police chief, ordered the investigation on Saturday after the young woman and a relative filed a complaint, supported by a report of her physical examination from Phichit Hospital.

The woman told police at the Muang Phichit station that she was celebrating the water festival with friends on Khao Tang Road in tambon Khlong Khachen of Muang district on the night of April 15, when a group of seven or eight young men approached to splash them.

The group then started to harass her before grabbing her and lifting her into the back of their pickup truck, she said. They then raped her on the vehicle that was parked in a deserted and dark area.

She said she tried to call out for help but to no avail because the music from the Songkran venue nearby was too loud.

Police said they suspected teenage players with a local football team in Muang district were responsible. They are searching for the suspects while continuing to collect evidence.
