CHACHOENGSAO — The abbot of a temple was killed and five monks and two laymen injured in accident involving three vehicles in Phanom Sarakham district on Saturday night, police said.
Pol Lt Kanoknan Suksri, the Phanom Sarakham police duty officer, said the incident occurred at 10.30pm on Highway 319 (Phanom Sarakham – Prachin Buri) in tambon Ban Song of Phanom Sarakham district.
A police investigation revealed that while a trailer truck stopped, waiting to make a U-turn on one side of the highway, a van which was running behind it rammed into its rear. The van was thrown by the impact to the other side of the road and hit by an on-coming bus, with no passengers.
The van was severely damaged. Luang Pu Phan Chanthako, 80, the abbot of Wat Pa Phokaew in tambon Hua Sa of Prachin Buri’s Si Mahaphot district, who was sitting on the left front seat, was killed.
The clash also injured seven other people in the van. They were five monks from Wat Pa Phokaew, a temple boy, and the driver.
The wounded were admitted to Phanom Sarakham Hospital.
The van was returning to the temple after a religious activity.
