An Irish tourist named as Mr Alan Paul Grimes, aged thirty-two, died on Thursday morning after jumping from the 4th floor concourse at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Monthian Baothong, chief of the airport police station, described the jump as ‘intentional’ and revealed Mr Grimes had taken the escalator to the fourth floor of the airport’s departure hall before climbing over the railing and falling to the ground.
The incident, he confirmed, happened at 6.35am. ‘We don’t know his motivation at this point,’ he said.’
Col. Monthian confirmed that the Irishman had initially survived the fall and was said to be in critical condition before passing away at the hospital.
There have been many suicides at the airport since it opened in 2006. In 2013 the Airports of Thailand announced it would spend 30 million baht to erect barriers and prevent jumpers.
