3 dead, 15 injured as school bus hits truck in Vietnam

Three people were killed and 15 others injured after a bus carrying high school students collided with a truck in Gia Lai Province, located in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, on Saturday.

The accident occurred at around 11:40 am when the bus of Tran Hung Dao High School hit the rear of the truck, as the latter was changing direction.

Nguyen Huu Que, director of the provincial Department of Transport, confirmed that three people had been killed by the collision, including Tran Ngoc Thanh, 49, who was the driver of the school bus, and Ta Thi Bich Van, 17, and Tran Thi Thu Truc, 18, who were both students of the school.

Fifteen other students were wounded and admitted to the Gia Lai General Hospital, Que continued, adding that three of them had been given emergency treatment for their serious injuries.

Seven victims were still being treated at the infirmary at 6:00 pm the same day.

Initial police reports on Saturday evening showed that the crash happened as the truck driver changed direction without signaling, while the school bus was traveling at high speed.

The school bus was carrying 33 students prior to the accident, officers stated, adding that further investigation is being carried out.

Chairman of the Gia Lai People’s Committee Vo Ngoc Thanh has visited the families of the deceased to extend his condolences.
