SA KAEO – A drug suspect ran away while still in chains and was whisked away by a waiting car from behind the provincial court after being brought to a hearing on Monday morning, according to media reports.
The incident occurred at about 9.30am after 29 suspects of different cases were brought from the prison for court hearings.
While the 29 suspects were being escorted in a line by prison staff and police to a detention room from the back of the court building, Choengchai Chumchuen, alias Korn, 26, ran away from the line while still in chains to a waiting white Toyota Vios with its left back door wide open for him to slip in.
Witnesses said a police officer quickly followed but could not catch him. The suspect managed to get into the car, which quickly sped away. The car did not have a licence plate.
Pithak Nookhao, a prison warder, said Mr Choengchai was one of the three suspects indicted by prosecutors for having in possession four kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine or “ice” with intent to sell and illegally carrying a weapon while committing the crime. The other two suspects in the case were Tawatchai “Jon” Wongkham and Pariya “Om” Saento, Mr Choengchai’s wife. They denied the charges.
The three were brought to court along with suspects in other cases for a pre-trial examination of evidence and witnesses.
Pol Maj Gen Yongyot Thepchamnong, the Sa Kaeo police chief, said the escape was apparently well-planned. The police had sought support from the 12th Infantry Regiment to hunt for the escapee, he said.
The footage of all security cameras in the area was being examined.
