An elderly man died in hospital after being found unconscious outside a shipping container near the scene of an arson in Yuen Long on Thursday, prompting an investigation into possible foul play.

Police said emergency services were called shortly before 1pm when used car tyres burst into flames in an open area near Shek Tong Tsuen off Yau Shin Street.

The Fire Services Department sent five fire engines and two ambulances to the scene. Black smoke emitted from burning rubber tyres was seen billowing into the air.

Firefighters used two water jets to battle the blaze and spent about 30 minutes to douse the flames.

Police said firefighters found a man, 62, surnamed Poon, unconscious outside a container near the scene.

The man was taken to Pok Oi Hospital, where he was certified dead before 3pm Thursday.

A Fire Services Department spokeswoman said the blaze was suspicious because the fire spread in an unusual manner and “fire accelerant was found at the scene”.

She said the department handed the case over to police. A force spokesman said at 5.30pm Thursday that officers were still investigating at the scene.
