The discovery was reported to police about 8.30am. Investigators hurried to the scene.

Pol Col Weerawat said the victims’ eyes had been covered with tape, their arms were tied and they had been beaten about the head.

They were earlier reported to have been abducted from a rubber plantation in Tha Muang of Songkhla early on Tuesday. Bloodstains were found on the bridge.

Later on Tuesday, security forces found the couple’s stolen brown Mitsubishi Strada pickup parked near a border patrol police camp in Thepha district. Inside were two cooking gas cylinders packed with 80kg of explosives. Explosive ordnance disposal police safely defused the car bomb.

Police investigators were examining images from surveillance cameras along routes believed used by the insurgents.
